Commonly Encountered Issues as a Couple

A La Verne, California resident, Timothy Kovacs graduated from California State University, obtaining a BA and MA in psychology. He currently serves as the assistant director of the Baldwin Park Unified School District Early Childhood Education. Timothy Kovacs is a marriage family therapist who helps children and parents.

Marriage family therapists serve as moderators in a family or marriage and enable all persons involved to hear the other person’s side of the story and the problem to fix it. One of the most commonly encountered issues in a family or marriage is communication. Lack of communication can cause many problems in a relationship, and people may grow distant because of it. One of the reasons why this happens is because they feel like they are being misunderstood and, in this way, stop communicating whatsoever and start avoiding the other person. Communication problems can also include constant arguing, bickering, or blaming.

Another common issue in a marriage or with a couple is emotional distance. One of the essential needs of a person is an emotional need. Typically, the partners involved can provide comfort and love to the other in a relationship. When this is no longer possible, an emotional distance has been created. As a result, the partner feels less intimate with the other and trusts them less. Couples can solve this problem by going to the therapist and receiving emotionally focused therapy, in which they can learn about the other person’s needs and how to meet them.
